Open Question: teachers are Virtually USELESS??!!?

one of my friends is really into philosophy; he's really smart and attended a college for philosophy. he is 22 and is attending a philosophy school in belgium next fall. my reaction to that was "why??"..what is the point in spending all that money to learn something that we could learn ourselves for FREE in a textbook?? why do we need teachers telling it to us? we can sure as heck learn all we want and follow our dreams without teachers.. same goes for college in general.....
