Open Question: Why didn't the French extend the Maginot Line to go across border with Belgium & Ardennes?

how long they took to build this underground fortress? and if the Germans had tried to attack across it ..could they still have suceeeded? why and how it worked? or was suppose to work? why the French never suspected that the Germans would invade through Belgium?
